  1. Open-Source Text-to-Image Diffusion Models in Production: Comparing FLUX.1, Stable Diffusion 3.5, PixArt-Sigma, and Sana

Production deployments of text-to-image generative systems have undergone a structural transition over the past two years. The classical convolutional U-Net architectures that powered Stable Diffusion 1.5 and Stable Diffusion XL have largely been superseded by transformer-based backbones. Modern open-weight models rely on Diffusion Transformers (DiT), Multimodal Diffusion Transformers (MMDiT), Linear DiTs, and Flow Matching formulations. Choosing an open-source text-to-image foundation model fo

  2. Gamma Acquires AI Design Startup Lica to Establish Multimodal Research Lab

AI presentation platform Gamma has acquired design startup Lica to establish an internal research division focused on multimodal communication and automated layout models. The deal brings Lica co-founders Priyaa Kalyanaraman and Purvanshi Mehta to Gamma to head the new research laboratory. Gamma reached a $2.1 billion valuation in November 2025 following a $68 million funding round, scaling its user base to more than 100 million accounts. The platform allows users to generate presentations, doc

  3. OpenAI Adds Native Alpha Transparency to GPT-Image-2 API

OpenAI has added native transparent background generation to its GPT-Image-2 model via the developer API, enabling direct creation of PNG images with integrated alpha channels. The feature bypasses post-processing segmentation pipelines, allowing developers to generate isolated visual assets directly during the synthesis step. Direct Alpha Generation vs. Post-Processing Traditional visual asset pipelines rely on secondary background-removal models, such as semantic segmentation masks or matti

  4. xAI Imagine Image 2.0 Lands Just Behind OpenAI GPT-Image-2 in Arena Benchmarks

xAI released Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7 as the new Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok iOS and Android apps. The model now sits second in the world on both major image leaderboards, behind only OpenAI's GPT-Image-2. On the Arena leaderboards as of August 7, the faster “low” variant of the model scores an Elo of 1,320 in the Text-to-Image Arena, trailing GPT-Image-2 at 1,380. In the Image Edit Arena it hits 1,439, again behind GPT-Image-2 at 1,463. The model is listed under

  5. Google pulls AI image tool from Earth one day after launch

Google removed the AI image-generation feature from Google Earth on July 31, 2026, roughly 24 hours after switching it on for every user of the browser version. The company said it is "rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails." What shipped The feature launched on July 30, 2026. Bryan Horowitz, a product manager on Google Earth, described it as a "create image" button in Earth on the web: zoom to any location, type a prompt, and Nano Banana 2
