Zhipu's GLM-5.3-Flash Runs Fully on Domestic Chinese Chips, Challenges NVIDIA Dominance
Zhipu's GLM-5.3-Flash Runs Fully on Domestic Chinese Chips, Challenges NVIDIA Dominance Zhipu AI's GLM-5.3-Flash model, initially released as the mysterious "Niu Lai" (Ox Alpha) model, has been confirmed to run entirely on domestically produced Chinese accelerator chips, marking a significant milestone in China's AI self-sufficiency efforts. The 320B parameter mixture-of-experts model activates only 18B parameters and achieves performance comparable to Claude Opus 4.8 while operating at 1/40th

Tsinghua Lineage, MoE Efficiency, and $1B Run Rates: Inside the Rise of China's Frontier AI Labs
The rapid emergence of frontier large language models from Chinese artificial intelligence labs has frequently been characterized as a sudden shift. However, reporting from The Wall Street Journal details a decades-long institutional foundation centered around Beijing's Tsinghua University, combined with architectural strategies developed to overcome severe compute and capital constraints. At the center of this ecosystem are researchers who transitioned from academic labs into commercial model

State Data Farms Account for 20% of China's Humanoid Robot Shipments
Government-backed data collection hubs and municipal training centers accounted for roughly 20 percent of China's more than 20,000 humanoid robot shipments last year, according to an analysis from Bernstein. The purchases reflect a national strategy to overcome the primary bottleneck in physical artificial intelligence: the scarcity of high-fidelity physical interaction data needed to train embodied foundation models. Unlike large language models that train on vast public text corpora scraped f

Apple Trained Its Own AI Model for China With Alibaba's Support
Apple has developed a custom large language model specifically for the Chinese market in partnership with Alibaba, marking a rare U.S.-China AI collaboration that gives Apple more control over its AI features in a key market where it has been losing ground to domestic rivals. According to Reuters, citing three people familiar with the matter, Apple trained the China-specific model with Alibaba's support. This departs from Apple's previous strategy of relying on third-party Chinese models to pow

Chinese AI labs dominate text-to-video: 9 of top 10 models are Chinese
Outside of Alphabet's Google, nine of the world's top ten text-to-video models are now Chinese, according to the Artificial Analysis leaderboard. The ranking, based on blind human evaluation of generated clips, places Google's Gemini Omni Flash at number one. Every slot from two through ten belongs to a Chinese lab. The Chinese contingent includes: MiniMax — H3 ByteDance — Seedance 2.0 Alibaba — Wan (two builds), HappyHorse (two builds, ~15B parameters, open weight) Kuaishou — Kling (two bu

Zhipu's GLM-5.2 Narrows the Gap With Anthropic's Fable 5 on Coding Benchmarks
Zhipu AI's open-weight GLM-5.2 model has placed second globally on the Code Arena coding benchmark, trailing only Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and sitting within one point of Claude Opus 4.8 on the hardest agentic tasks. The result, recorded after the model's June 13 release under an MIT license, signals a fast-closing capability gap between Chinese open-weight systems and the leading U.S. frontier models. Benchmark Performance On Code Arena's front-end coding leaderboard, GLM-5.2 places second

ByteDance Trains 10 Trillion-Parameter AI Model to Rival Anthropic's Mythos
ByteDance is pretraining a large model with up to 10 trillion parameters, a scale the Financial Times reports could put it in the same class as Anthropic's most advanced systems. The model, still in early pretraining, would be more than three times the size of Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, currently the largest Chinese model at 2.8 trillion parameters. Three people familiar with the project told the FT the model is in pretraining, a phase that typically lasts three to six months before full training a

Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 tops benchmarks as Chinese models reach the frontier
A two-year-old Beijing startup has produced a model that sits closer to the American frontier than anything from Alphabet, Meta, or SpaceX. Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, released July 16, is a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight system that jumped to first place on Arena.ai's Frontend Code leaderboard within hours of release, scoring 1,679 points against 1,631 for Anthropic's Claude Fable 5. It was the first Chinese model ever to top that board. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, K3 debuted

China warns of Claude Code security risk as Alibaba bans Anthropic tools
China's cybersecurity authority has formally warned that Anthropic's Claude Code contains a back-door vulnerability, escalating a dispute that already prompted Alibaba to ban employees from using the AI coding tool. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued the warning on July 8 through its national cybersecurity threat platform. The statement said Claude Code versions 2.1.91 through 2.1.196 could transmit sensitive user information, including location and identi

Alibaba launches Qwen 3.8-Max, benchmarks fall short of claims
Alibaba officially launched Qwen 3.8-Max on August 3, calling it the most powerful model in the Qwen family to date. The 2.4 trillion-parameter model supports a one-million-token context window and is multimodal, capable of processing text, images, video, and documents in a single prompt. The company priced Qwen 3.8-Max at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, with implicit caching at $0.25 per million tokens. That positions it well below the pricing of frontier models f
