Tencent says its next flagship model, Hunyuan Hy4, will be released soon, and that it will understand images for the first time. Tang Daosheng (汤道生), Tencent senior executive vice president and CEO of its Cloud and Smart Industries Group, made the announcement on October 29 at the 2026 Tencent Global Digital Ecosystem Summit, according to Science and Technology Daily and Cailian Press. A value-focused sibling, Hy4 Flash, is due in the near term as well.
This is an announcement, not a launch. Tencent gave no release date, no benchmark scores, no prices and no model card for either model at the event, based on the reports cited here. What it did give is a direction: Hy4 is built for long, multi-step work and for the agent products Tencent is selling to businesses.
What Tencent said about Hy4
According to the Science and Technology Daily report, Tencent said that compared with Hy4 Preview, Hy4:
- strengthens its ability on long-horizon tasks and real productivity tasks
- improves the efficiency of its chain of thought
- adds visual understanding, a first for the Hy4 line
Cailian Press reported the same points and added that Tencent described the upgrade over Hy4 Preview as broad and large. These are Tencent's own descriptions. No outside test has checked them yet.
What Hy4 Flash is for
Tencent positioned Hy4 Flash as a practical model with very high value for money, Cailian Press reported. It is meant to inherit Hy4's vision and agent abilities and to evolve through frequent updates driven by what Tencent called deep "co-design" of the model and its products, per the Science and Technology Daily and TMTPost reports. PChome calls it a lightweight version, but none of the reports say how much smaller or cheaper it will be.
What Hy4 builds on
Tencent released and open-sourced Hy4 Preview on August 28, with 770 billion total parameters, 49 billion active parameters and a context window of more than 1 million tokens, Science and Technology Daily reported. "Active parameters" is the share of a mixture-of-experts model that runs for each token, and it is a main factor in what the model costs to serve.
Hy4 Preview already draws developer traffic. In the week of October 19 to 25 it was the fifth most used model on the OpenRouter routing service, at 8.97 trillion tokens, according to OpenRouter data cited by Caixin and summarized by Dealroom on October 27. All five top spots that week went to Chinese models, led by DeepSeek. Routed tokens measure traffic through one service, not market share or revenue.

Open weights and API: one report, not confirmed
Tech site PChome reported that Hy4 keeps the 770B mixture-of-experts design and 1M-token context of the Preview, that both new models will work with Tencent products such as WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy, and that they will be offered through open-source release and cloud APIs. PChome framed this as what it had learned, not as a Tencent statement. Treat open weights for Hy4 as unconfirmed until Tencent posts them.
The bigger pitch: agents as a product
Hy4 was one part of a speech about agents. Tang said agents are becoming a new form of productivity and framed Tencent's offer around three themes: every scenario, high efficiency and more trust, Phoenix Tech reported. Per that report:
- Tencent Cloud uses products such as WorkBuddy to connect office work, data and business systems.
- Tencent Cloud released new products including Buddy One and Tencent Netdisk, described as high-performance, cost-effective agent infrastructure.
- Tencent described a "trusted AI" governance system meant to keep agent behavior controllable, processes traceable and data manageable.
- Tencent Cloud says its active overseas customers have doubled and that it serves more than 150 countries and regions.
Why it matters
Chinese labs are shipping fast this month. DeepSeek updated V4.1-Flash on October 17, MiniMax released M3.1 Flash on October 19, and Moonshot released Kimi K3.1 Pro later that week, according to a Founder Securities research note summarized by GMT Eight on October 28. Each of those shipped as a usable model, and DeepSeek and MiniMax also released weights. Tencent, by contrast, named the model and its goals but gave no release details.
Vision support matters for agents. A model that can read screenshots, documents and charts can do more office and computer-use work without a separate vision model in the loop. That fits Tencent's push to sell WorkBuddy and its agent stack to businesses.
The open question is whether Hy4 ships as open weights like Hy4 Preview did. If it does, it becomes another large Chinese open model competing for the same developer traffic that DeepSeek, MiniMax and Zhipu now lead on OpenRouter.
What to watch
- A release date and model card for Hy4 and Hy4 Flash
- Whether Tencent posts Hy4 weights, as it did for Hy4 Preview
- API prices, especially for Hy4 Flash, which Tencent is pitching on value for money
- Independent benchmark results, since all capability claims so far come from Tencent
