You do not need a machine learning degree to use AI in marketing. The free courses below teach what AI tools can and cannot do, how to write a prompt, and how the AI features inside ad, email and SEO platforms work. Several come from the companies that build those platforms.

This list covers 11 free courses from nine providers, as of October 2026. We opened every course page and quote lengths, formats and certificate rules from those pages. Where a provider does not state a price on the course page, we say so. Course catalogs change often, so check the page before you plan around a detail.

Three groups of free AI courses for marketers: AI basics, AI in your tools, and search, ads and PR

How to use this list

The courses fall into three groups:

  • AI basics. Short courses that teach what generative AI is, how to prompt it, and how to check its output. Take one of these first if AI is new to you.
  • AI in your tools. Courses from HubSpot, Google, Meta and Salesforce that teach AI inside the platforms marketers already use.
  • Search, ads and PR. Courses on AI search visibility, AI PR tools and digital marketing fundamentals.

If you only have one afternoon, take one course from the AI basics group and one from the AI in your tools group that matches the platform you use most.

AI basics

OpenAI Academy: AI Foundations

OpenAI Academy is OpenAI's free learning site. Its help article on courses answers "Are Academy courses free?" with "Yes. Academy courses are free. You must have a ChatGPT account to start a course and save your progress."

The course to start with is AI Foundations. OpenAI lists it at 60 to 75 minutes and says it teaches you to "Learn AI basics, write clearer prompts, add useful context, review outputs, and use AI responsibly." The follow-on courses, Applied AI Foundations and Agents and Workflows, cover repeatable workflows and handing tasks to agents.

Every course has an assessment. To earn an OpenAI Academy badge you complete the course and pass the assessment "with a score of 80% or higher." OpenAI is clear that "These badges and certificates of completion are not certifications."

Best for: marketers whose team already uses ChatGPT.

Anthropic Academy: AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations

AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations is listed as "Register | FREE" on Anthropic's course site. Anthropic built it with Prof. Joseph Feller (University College Cork) and Prof. Rick Dakan (Ringling College) and says it teaches "practical skills for effective, efficient, ethical, and safe AI interaction."

The curriculum is built around four ideas: Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence. In plain terms: decide what to hand to AI, describe the task well, judge the output, and use AI responsibly. There are deep dives on what generative AI is and on effective prompting techniques. At the end you can take a final assessment and receive a certificate of completion.

Best for: anyone who wants a tool-neutral way to think about working with AI, not just a list of prompt tricks.

Elements of AI

Elements of AI is "a series of free online courses created by MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki." The first course, An Introduction to AI, is for "everyone interested in learning what AI is, what is possible (and not possible) with AI, and how it affects our lives," with "no complicated math or programming required."

It is less about marketing and more about understanding the technology, which helps when vendors make big claims. It is self-paced. The site also offers a separate certificate on "general AI literacy" that it says takes 60 minutes.

Best for: marketers who want to understand the ideas behind AI, not just the buttons.

SmarterX: Intro to AI live class

SmarterX, the company behind the Marketing AI Institute, runs a free live Intro to AI class. The page describes it as a "free 60-minute online class" for business leaders with "zero technical background." The next session listed is Wednesday, December 2, 2026, at 12pm ET (9am PT). Seats are limited, according to the page.

The class is taught by Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of SmarterX and Marketing AI Institute. The listed topics include finding "the best AI use cases for immediate impact in your role," a "simple framework for finding and evaluating AI technology vendors," and how "to measure the impact of AI on your team's efficiency and performance."

Best for: marketing leads who need to pitch an AI pilot to their boss.

AI in your tools

HubSpot Academy: AI for Marketing Course

HubSpot Academy's AI for Marketing Course is labeled "FREE Course" and lists 6 lessons, 15 videos and 4 quizzes, about 2 hours 49 minutes in all. The page says the course shows how AI can "supercharge your content creation and personalize your customer experiences." Lessons include AI prompting for marketers, AI insights for strategic decisions, and AI for marketing campaigns.

One thing to know before you start: it is a standard course, not a certification. In February 2024, a HubSpot community expert answered a learner's question with "AI For Marketers is just a standard course, it does not have a certification." HubSpot marks courses that award a certificate with a CERTIFICATION tag.

Best for: inbound and content marketers, especially teams on HubSpot.

Google Skills: AI Boost Bootcamp: How to Use Gemini for Marketing 201

AI Boost Bootcamp: How to Use Gemini for Marketing 201 is a 45-minute, intermediate course on Google Skills. Google says it is "Based on Google's own proven internal training" and teaches Gemini "for market research, campaign execution, content creation at scale, and performance reporting," plus how "to build custom AI agents for marketing with Gemini Enterprise." You earn a completion badge.

Google's launch post lists the tools covered, including NotebookLM, Gemini Deep Research, Gemini Canvas, Gemini in Google Slides, Google Vids and the =AI() function in Google Sheets. It builds on a 101 course for all knowledge workers.

A note on price: the course page and launch post we read do not state a fee. Class Central lists it as a free course.

Best for: marketing teams that work in Google Workspace.

Meta Blueprint: Generative AI for marketers

Meta describes Blueprint as "Free Online Training for Advertising on Facebook." Its Generative AI for marketers path runs 30 minutes and promises to "teach you how to write effective prompts, refine your ad creative and generate high-quality content to drive business growth."

The videos are short, from 3 to 6 minutes each: Crafting prompts, Intermediate prompt engineering, Generating creative with AI, Media captions, Website content, and Generative AI Features in Advantage+. The last one covers AI creative in Meta's Ads Manager.

Best for: social and paid media marketers who run Facebook and Instagram ads.

Salesforce Trailhead: Artificial Intelligence for Marketing

Salesforce says "Trailhead offers free AI for marketing courses" on its AI for Marketers page. A good first pick is the Artificial Intelligence for Marketing badge: about 30 minutes, rated Foundational, in two units (Get to Know AI, and Scale Your Marketing With AI) of about 15 minutes each.

If you want more basics first, the Generative AI Basics badge takes about 20 minutes and covers the capabilities of generative AI and the technology behind it.

Best for: marketers on Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or anyone who likes short, badge-based lessons.

Search, ads and PR

Semrush Academy: AI Search Operating System and AI PR Toolkit Crash Course

Semrush Academy lists its catalog as "Free Online Marketing Courses." Two courses are tagged AI:

  • AI Search Operating System (9 lessons, 40 minutes, with certification). Semrush says it gives "SEO and marketing leaders a practical operating system to bring clarity, audit AI visibility, and build a 90-day action plan."
  • AI PR Toolkit Crash Course (9 lessons, 27 minutes, with certification). It shows how to use Semrush's AI PR Toolkit "to find the right journalists, craft pitches that land, and monitor every brand mention."

The PR course teaches a Semrush product, so it is most useful if you already have access. The AI search course is pitched at strategy, and Semrush says it ends with a 90-day action plan.

Best for: SEO, content and PR specialists.

Google Skillshop: Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

Fundamentals of Digital Marketing is the long option on this list: 40 hours across 17 modules, "from AI tools to video marketing." Modules include building a digital marketing strategy, creating engaging content, social media, search and email campaigns. On completion you earn a badge you can add to your Skillshop and LinkedIn profiles.

Google's Skillshop help page says that when you sign up "you can access the library of free online courses designed by Google product experts." Skillshop also hosts the Google Ads certifications. Google's certification page says you need a score of 80% or greater, you have 75 minutes for an assessment, and a certification stays valid for one year.

Best for: early-career marketers who want a broad grounding with AI built in.

Which course should you take first?

  • New to AI: OpenAI's AI Foundations (60 to 75 minutes) or Anthropic's AI Fluency. Both end with an assessment.
  • Paid social: Meta's Generative AI for marketers. It is 30 minutes and goes straight to ad creative.
  • Google Workspace team: Gemini for Marketing 201, after the 101 course if you have never used Gemini at work.
  • SEO and content: Semrush's AI Search Operating System, then HubSpot's AI for Marketing Course.
  • Team lead: the SmarterX live class, for a framework to choose tools and measure results.

OpenAI notes that its badges are not certifications, and the same caution fits other completion badges. To get more from a course, apply it to real work: a prompt library for your team, an AI-assisted campaign with before-and-after numbers, or an audit of how AI search tools describe your brand.
