Oracle Brings ChatGPT and Codex to Its Business Apps

Oracle and OpenAI announced ChatGPT plugins for Oracle apps, a security service on OpenAI cyber models, a Codex app builder and an SMB bundle.

Oracle and OpenAI announced an expanded partnership on October 27 at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas. The products let people use Oracle business software from inside ChatGPT and build apps on it with Codex. Oracle's press release describes four products that bring "OpenAI models, ChatGPT, and Codex" together with Oracle's applications, data and cloud.

The same event also brought hardware news, including Google TPUs and, per CNBC, OpenAI's Jalapeño chip on Oracle's cloud. We cover that side in Oracle Brings Google TPUs, Cerebras and Jalapeño to OCI. This post is about the software: what changes for people who use ChatGPT and Oracle systems at work.

Four Oracle products built with OpenAI: Oracle AI Workspace, Oracle AI Security Mesh, Oracle App Composer, Oracle AI SMB Bundle

The four products

Oracle AI Workspace. Oracle calls this "a single user experience that brings OpenAI frontier models together with Oracle applications, enterprise data, and cloud services." It works through plugins in ChatGPT. According to Oracle, employees can use them to "access information, complete approved business workflows, and take action alongside Oracle systems." It is designed to connect Oracle Fusion Applications, Oracle NetSuite, Oracle AI Database, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and other enterprise tools and data sources. Oracle says people can describe a business goal and the plugins "will bring together the right Oracle tools and information to help them accomplish it," while keeping "the governance, approvals, and controls required for enterprise operations."

Oracle AI Security Mesh. This is a managed service that uses OpenAI cyber models to help customers "find and fix vulnerabilities in their applications and infrastructure across OCI, other clouds, and on-premises environments before attackers can exploit them." Oracle combines the models with its own testing tools, independent validation, testing infrastructure and operational safeguards. The pitch is that customers "don't need to build and operate their own agentic defensive/offensive systems." Customers define where testing is authorized and control its scope. Oracle manages the safeguards "to reduce the risk of outages or business disruption during testing."

Oracle App Composer. This tool is for employees who want to turn an idea into an internal application "without requiring coding expertise to build or maintain them." Users build with Codex, and Oracle handles deployment and operations on OCI. Oracle says App Composer connects apps to approved Oracle data and workflows, gives access to OCI services such as OCI Kubernetes Engine and Oracle Autonomous AI Database, and applies "enterprise identity, permissions, networking, audit, and application life cycle controls." It also supports APEXlang, which Oracle describes as a new technology that gives "the speed of generative development without producing opaque application code that is difficult to maintain."

Oracle AI SMB Bundle. This is aimed at small businesses. Oracle calls it a "free-to-start packaged offering" that provides $12,000 in Oracle cloud credits each year. It bundles ChatGPT Business for daily work, Oracle AI Workspace for reaching business apps and data through ChatGPT, Codex and Oracle App Composer for building apps, OCI for deploying them, and NetSuite QuickStart for core operations such as invoicing and cash flow. Oracle adds that "terms, conditions, and restrictions apply."

How Oracle AI Workspace works: a ChatGPT user describes a goal, plugins in ChatGPT reach Oracle systems, while governance, approvals and controls are maintained

What the two companies said

Oracle co-CEO Clay Magouyrk said in the release: "OpenAI is transforming how enterprises solve business problems, from chat, to coding, to analytics, to autonomous agents. With this new product suite, we are uniting their transformative AI capabilities with Oracle applications, data, and cloud infrastructure."

Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and co-founder, said: "More businesses are choosing OpenAI as we make it easier to put AI to work through the tools and systems they already use."

Mahesh Thiagarajan, Oracle's president of Cloud Infrastructure, told CNBC that using ChatGPT "allows anybody to build an application, deploy it, manage it." CNBC also reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was set to join Magouyrk on stage for an Oracle AI World keynote on Tuesday.

Why it matters

Oracle says AI Workspace will make its software "agent-ready and accessible to ChatGPT users." People describe a business goal in ChatGPT, and the plugins bring together the Oracle tools and data to reach it. Approvals and controls stay in place, Oracle says.

For OpenAI, CNBC framed the deal as "another example of the frontier lab's push into the enterprise market." It follows other moves to put OpenAI models where companies already buy software, such as OpenAI models arriving on Google Cloud. Enterprise is one of the revenue lines in our explainer on how OpenAI makes money.

AI Security Mesh tests customer systems for vulnerabilities. Oracle says customers set the authorized scope and Oracle runs the safeguards "to reduce the risk of outages or business disruption during testing." The release does not say more about how those safeguards work.

What we don't know yet

Oracle's release does not give launch dates, regions or prices for AI Workspace, AI Security Mesh or App Composer. It does not name which OpenAI models or which "cyber models" power each product. The release carries Oracle's standard future product disclaimer, which says the timing and pricing of features "may change and remains at the sole discretion of Oracle Corporation." The $12,000 credit figure for the SMB bundle is the only number Oracle printed for the new products.
