OpenAI Introduces Advertising to ChatGPT Free and Go Tiers in India

OpenAI has begun displaying commercial advertisements to users on its Free and Go subscription tiers in India. The initiative marks the latest expansion of OpenAI's advertising monetization framework, following initial rollouts across the United States and selected European and Asia-Pacific markets earlier this year.

India represents one of OpenAI's largest consumer bases globally, with over 100 million weekly active users recorded in early 2026. A substantial majority of this user volume accesses the service via either the free tier or the localized, low-cost ChatGPT Go subscription tier.

Launch Partners and Ad Manager Specifications

The initial rollout features promotional campaigns from 50 launch brands, coordinated through advertising holding companies WPP and Omnicom. According to OpenAI, promotional placements are selected based on contextual relevance during query sessions without altering the underlying model output or factual grounding.

OpenAI plans to open a self-service Ad Manager tool next month. The platform will allow independent advertisers to configure campaigns with a minimum entry budget set at ₹725 ($7.60) per day.

Monetization Strategy and Market Context

The move follows several strategic adjustments to OpenAI's Indian operations over the past twelve months. The company introduced a sub-$5 monthly ChatGPT Go tier in August 2025, supported by nationwide promotional campaigns and localized leadership hiring.

Commercial ad integration forms a key part of OpenAI's multi-tiered revenue diversification strategy as the company scales infrastructure commitments ahead of an anticipated public listing. Financial filings reported by the Wall Street Journal indicated quarterly revenue reached $6.7 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the preceding quarter.
