Apple has told developers that App Store apps with a virtual companion that engages users in sexual or romantic content must carry a minimum age rating of 18+. The change was announced in a developer news post on November 2, 2026. It matters most for AI girlfriend and boyfriend apps, and for any chatbot app that has a romantic mode, because TechCrunch says such apps are often targeted at younger people.
Apple's post does not name a single app. The wording is about features, and the companion rule sits inside a larger category that Apple calls Dating and Relationships.
What Apple changed
Starting November 16, 2026, the age rating questionnaire in App Store Connect, the tool developers use to submit apps, will ask for two new declarations. According to Apple, a developer must say whether the app includes:
- Shared Location: sharing of real-world location with another person or group.
- Dating and Relationships: features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people, or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.
Apple says developers must give these answers when they submit an app update or change their age rating answers. Every app must have the declarations completed by January 12, 2027. Apps that include Dating and Relationships receive a minimum age rating of 18+. Apps that include Shared Location may not see any change to their minimum rating in some regions.

So the rule does not say that every AI chatbot is 18+. It says that a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content counts as a dating and relationship feature, and that feature sets the 18+ floor.

Why AI companions are in scope
The Verge reports that Apple already had an 18+ category, but it mostly covered apps with gambling, violence, references to drugs, alcohol or tobacco, and nudity or sexual content. Most dating platforms are already adult only. The Verge describes the new descriptors as an effort to stop minors from slipping through the cracks, and to keep them away from AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions and from virtual girlfriend and boyfriend simulators that could pose mental health risks.
TechCrunch adds that the change follows other steps Apple has taken to protect minors, including a global rollout of its age assurance technology and more parental controls and child safety features. TechCrunch also says it is interesting how the rule could affect AI companion apps, including apps where companion functionality is one of many features. It names Character.AI and Replika as examples of apps that let people create AI companions, including friends, lovers, boyfriends and girlfriends. It notes that xAI launched 3D animated AI companions in 2025 that allowed users to unlock NSFW capabilities, and that, and that top AI companion apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play had been downloaded 220 million times worldwide, a figure it dates only as "last summer."
Cybernews suggests Apple may have acted because of concerns about the category. It says many companion apps have been insecure, leading to data leaks and the exposure of intimate data, and that researchers at the University of Singapore found AI companions showing dozens of harmful behaviors, from harassment to verbal abuse, in 2025. Apple itself does not give reasons in its developer post, so these are outside explanations for the timing, not Apple's stated motive.
What parents and users should know
The change is about ratings and declarations, not about removing apps. Nothing in Apple's post says an existing app will disappear on November 16. Developers have until January 12, 2027, to complete their answers, so the new ratings may appear app by app over the next few months.
Two practical points follow from the source material. First, the rating is a label that depends on what the developer declares. Apple's post does not say how it will check those answers, so a rating is a starting point, not a guarantee. Second, one app can hold several features. TechCrunch says the rule could affect apps where companion functionality is one of many features, so a general chatbot with a romantic mode may be affected.
If you have a child with an iPhone, the useful step is to look at the age rating shown on an AI app's App Store page after it updates, and to check the app's own settings as well. Our guide to AI chatbot parental controls covers what ChatGPT, Gemini and Character.AI offer on their side. An age label on the store and controls inside the app do different jobs, and neither replaces a conversation at home about what these apps are for.
What is still unclear
- Which apps will be affected. Apple names none, and the line between a companion that engages in romantic content and a friendly persona is a judgment developers make first.
- How Apple will verify the answers and what happens to an app that declares incorrectly. The developer post does not say.
- What happens outside Apple. The sources we read describe the App Store only. We did not find a matching Google Play change in them, so we do not report one.
- Location sharing. Apple says Shared Location may not change a minimum age in some regions. In Brazil, local rules require an A16 rating for Shared Location and an A18 rating for Dating and Relationships, and a developer who believes its app qualifies for a lower rating, for example location sharing built for parents and children, can request an official rating from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Cybernews headlines the story as all AI companion apps being rated 18+, which is broader than Apple's wording. Apple's own text limits the 18+ minimum to apps that include the Dating and Relationships feature.
Why it matters
Outside critics have raised safety and privacy concerns about AI companion apps, and The Verge ties virtual girlfriend and boyfriend simulators to possible mental health risks. Lawmakers are also acting: New York's new AI companion law bars certain chatbot features for users under 18 from January 1, 2027, and Texas has sued OpenAI over ChatGPT and minors. Apple now puts a hard age floor on the romantic and sexual end of that category in the App Store. App makers will have to decide whether to keep a romantic mode, age gate it, or drop it, and they have a deadline in January to decide.
