Google has made two changes to Gemini in the car this week. On October 20 it started rolling out Personal Intelligence on Android Auto, which lets Gemini answer questions using your Gmail, Calendar, Photos and other Google apps while you drive. On October 21 it added Gemini to Google Maps navigation on Apple CarPlay. The two updates sound alike, but they do different things, and which one you get depends on your car, your phone, your account and where you live.
What changed on Android Auto
In its October 20 announcement, Google said Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in, which The Verge describes as cars that add support for native Android apps. The new part is Personal Intelligence.
With your permission, Personal Intelligence connects information from Workspace (including Gmail and Google Calendar), Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. The point is that you can ask a question without spelling out the context. Google's own examples:
- "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" Gemini finds the confirmation email and checks for delays in one answer.
- "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe." Google says a vegetarian would get a shortlist that fits.
- "Take me to my doctor's appointment," without looking up the address first.
- "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there."
- "Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday."
Personal Intelligence is rolling out on Android Auto now. Google says it reaches cars with Google built-in "in the coming months." If you already turned it on in the Gemini app on your phone, Google says the setting comes with you into the car.

What changed on CarPlay
CarPlay drivers get a smaller update. Google Maps on CarPlay now has a Gemini icon during navigation. Tap it on the car's display and you can talk to Gemini about the drive, 9to5Google reports. The Google Maps account on X gave these sample prompts, quoted by Thurrott:
- "What park is famous for gorgeous views overlooking the city?"
- "I want to go at a time when it's not too busy and the weather will stay nice. Is now a good time?"
- "Start navigating me there but make sure to avoid toll roads."
You can also report traffic disruptions by voice. 9to5Google notes this is the first time Google Maps has offered a voice assistant inside CarPlay. Before, Google Assistant worked only when you navigated with Maps on the iPhone itself. The feature is available now in the US, and Google says a global rollout is underway.
What CarPlay does not get, at least in Google's announcement, is Personal Intelligence. The Verge said Google made no mention of the Personal Intelligence features for CarPlay and that it had asked Google whether they are coming. So on an iPhone in a CarPlay car, Gemini can help with places, routes and traffic, but Google has not said it can read your Gmail or Calendar there.
Who can turn on Personal Intelligence
Google's footnote sets clear limits. Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts for people aged 18 and older. It is not available for Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts. It is also not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or Nigeria.

In plain terms: if you use a work or school Google account, or you live in Europe, the UK or Nigeria, you will not see this yet, even if your car runs Android Auto.
The privacy trade
This feature only works if Gemini can look at your email, calendar, photos and saved places. Google says it built Personal Intelligence "with privacy at the center":
- Your apps are not connected until you turn the feature on.
- You can turn it off at any time in your Gemini settings.
- Cars with Google built-in share personal responses only when you are in the car with your phone connected.
- If you do not use it, the car still works. Google says you can still navigate, play music, make calls and ask questions, "but the answers won't be tailored to you."
The phone rule for built-in cars matters if other people drive the same car. By Google's description, personal answers in those cars depend on your phone being connected.
How to get it
- Android Auto: Make sure Personal Intelligence is on in your Gemini settings on your phone. If it is already on in the Gemini app, Google says it carries over to the car. The rollout is gradual, so it may not show up right away.
- Cars with Google built-in: Gemini is there now. Personal Intelligence comes in the coming months, per Google. The Verge lists Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar among carmakers that have shipped newer cars with Google built-in.
- CarPlay: Use Google Maps on CarPlay, start navigation, and tap the Gemini icon on the car's screen. US first.
Why it matters
Google's pitch is that you can ask a natural question without touching your phone while driving, and get an answer that already knows your plans. Android Authority puts it as fewer reasons to reach for your phone behind the wheel, while noting that giving an assistant access to your whole Google account may not appeal to everyone. The Verge notes Gemini reached Android Auto last year and cars with Google built-in in April, so this is a step up from the general assistant, not a first launch.
It also shows the gap between Google's own platform and Apple's. On Android Auto, Gemini can draw on your Google account. On CarPlay, it lives inside the Google Maps app and, for now, sticks to the drive. Apple's own Siri AI is a separate product. Yonhap reports it is powered by Google's Gemini and launched in beta in English in September. For iPhone owners who use Google Maps, the CarPlay update is still the first time they can talk to Maps on the dashboard instead of on the phone.
