The acquisition follows rapid valuation growth for OpenRouter, which raised a $113 million Series B round at a $1.3 billion post-money valuation in May 2026 with backing from Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG.

Strategic Integration of Token Routing and Payment Infrastructure

OpenRouter operates a unified API gateway that aggregates access to over 400 large language models from commercial providers and open-weight hosters. The service allows software developers to route inference queries dynamically across competing model backends based on latency, price, context window length, and throughput availability. OpenRouter reported reaching 8 million global users, acting as an intermediary layer that prevents vendor lock-in across frontier labs.

The integration expands Stripe's core payments and billing architecture into automated AI token metering and usage-based billing.
