Reddit users discovered over the weekend of July 26-27, 2026 that typing "site:claude.ai/share" into Google surfaced a long list of shared Claude conversations. Some reportedly contained health records, private company documents, and the names and phone numbers of children.

How it happened

The exposure stems from Claude's "share chat" feature, which lets users create public links to their conversations. The interface warns "Anyone with the link can view," implying the feature is meant for sharing with small groups rather than the entire internet. However, once a shared link is posted somewhere search engines can crawl, such as a forum or social media, the conversation becomes indexed and publicly discoverable.

Anthropic told TechCrunch that share links only appear in search results when they have been posted somewhere search engines can see. The company said links sent privately remain out of search. Anthropic also stated it does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines.

Not the first time

This is the second known incident of Claude conversations appearing in search results. Forbes reported a similar issue in September 2025, when Google estimated it had indexed just under 600 conversations before the pages disappeared from results. At that time, Anthropic said it uses a robots.txt file to prevent search engines from indexing shared chats.

The Guardian reported that Anthropic allows users to create public links similar to Google Docs sharing. The key difference: Google Docs documents do not typically end up in public search results, while Claude share links apparently can.

What users should do

Users who have shared Claude conversations should check whether their links appear in Google by searching "site:claude.ai/share" followed by their username or other identifying terms. Shared links can be deleted from within Claude's interface. Anthropic also offers a "Keep private" option when creating share links, which prevents them from being indexed.
