Stripe Inc. has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter Inc., the startup that helps companies switch between artificial intelligence models, for more than $7 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.
The deal underscores the growing demand from businesses to find the most cost-efficient AI solutions. OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation in May jumped nearly 5.4x in just 82 days as the AI infrastructure market heats up.
OpenRouter's role in the AI ecosystem
OpenRouter operates a marketplace where developers pick between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and others through a single API, taking a fee on each transaction. Stripe already processes OpenRouter's payments, so the acquisition puts the payments giant directly at the layer where AI traffic is bought and sold.
Strategic implications
For Stripe, the acquisition extends a $159 billion payments business into AI infrastructure. The move signals that control of model routing and billing, not just the models themselves, is becoming contested territory in the AI economy.
The deal comes on the heels of another major AI acquisition - Anthropic reportedly in talks to acquire Decart AI for about $6 billion - highlighting a wave of consolidation in the AI startup space.
