Five winners and three finalists of the 2026 Pulitzer Prizes disclosed using artificial intelligence in their reporting, the highest number since the disclosure requirement was introduced in 2024.

The eight awardees used AI primarily to accelerate document review and data analysis rather than to generate text. Several reporters described deploying large language models to summarize and classify thousands of pages of public records on tight deadlines.

Wall Street Journal reporters used an internal tool called WSJPT, built on LLM APIs, to summarize every page of documents scraped from the Kerr County, Texas government portal while investigating whether local officials had ignored warnings about flood risks before a deadly 2025 disaster. The Associated Press used machine learning models to analyze satellite imagery and pattern-recognition systems to track the global spread of surveillance technology built in Silicon Valley and deployed by the Chinese state.

Marjorie Miller, the Pulitzer administrator, said the industry has moved past its earlier apprehension toward AI tools. "There is a clearer understanding now of what uses might be appropriate -- data collection and analysis, for example -- and when it might not, such as in writing and editing stories," she told Nieman Lab.

The 2026 disclosures mark a shift from previous years, when awardees relied mainly on conventional machine learning techniques like embedding models and image classifiers. This year, generative AI and commercial LLMs were the dominant tools, used almost exclusively to process large document dumps rather than to produce prose.

Miller added that next year the Pulitzers will extend the AI disclosure requirement to book entries, following recent controversies over AI-generated text appearing in prize-winning literary works.

The five winners who disclosed AI use received prizes across categories including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, and International Reporting. The three finalists acknowledged using AI in Beat Reporting, Public Service, and Explanatory Reporting submissions.
