OpenAI head of data centers Chris Malone has departed the company, marking another high-level transition within the artificial intelligence lab as it restructures its infrastructure divisions ahead of a planned initial public offering.
Malone, who joined OpenAI in March 2025 after five years leading data center strategy at Meta and over a decade as an engineer at Google, oversaw technical deployment across OpenAI's compute expansion efforts.
Infrastructure Realignment
Malone's exit coincides with an internal reorganization of OpenAI's computing and data center divisions. As part of the restructuring, reporting lines were shifted from OpenAI President Greg Brockman to Vice President Sachin Katti, who now leads the consolidated infrastructure group.
OpenAI confirmed the departure, stating that the reorganization was designed to support the scale and pace of its infrastructure roadmap. Day-to-day data center operations and engineering continue under existing leadership, including Uday Ruddarraju leading data center operations, Brent Mayo directing facility delivery, and Spas Lazarov overseeing data center engineering.
Leadership Turnover Ahead of 2027 IPO Target
Malone's departure follows several leadership changes across OpenAI's executive ranks over the past two months. Recent exits include Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, product and business head Fidji Simo, and ethics lead Chloé Bakalar.
The executive adjustments arrive as OpenAI coordinates capital-intensive infrastructure commitments, including the Stargate computing initiative alongside Oracle, SoftBank, and Microsoft, while preparing financial operations for a targeted public market listing in 2027.
