Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has announced the close of a $1.1 billion dedicated fund named "Machine Age." The vehicle is structured to invest specifically in the physical infrastructure and hardware supply chains required to scale modern artificial intelligence workloads.
The launch marks a significant capital allocation into capital-intensive physical systems by a firm historically recognized for software-centric investments.
Target Hardware and Infrastructure Domains
According to the firm, the fund focuses on critical bottlenecks across the AI computing stack, spanning silicon design to facility operations:
- Semiconductors and Custom Silicon: Specialized inference accelerators, training ASICs, and energy-efficient processors.
- Memory Architecture: High-bandwidth memory (HBM) modules, near-memory computing, and low-latency cache hierarchies.
- Interconnect and Networking: Optical interconnects, high-throughput network fabric, and node-to-node switching systems designed to support distributed cluster scaling.
- Edge Devices and Robotics: Power-efficient compute modules and sensors enabling embodied AI and robotics in physical environments.
- Data Center Infrastructure: Advanced liquid cooling systems, power distribution units, electrical grid integrations, and specialized real estate facilities.

Capital Dynamics in the Physical AI Stack
As frontier AI models demand escalating gigawatt-scale power allocations and higher compute density, the industry faces severe physical scaling constraints. Power availability, thermal dissipation in dense server racks, and interconnect bandwidth limits have become primary pacing factors for model training and high-throughput inference serving.
Andreessen Horowitz positioned the investment vehicle as an effort to accelerate physical deployment timelines, arguing that scaling computing hardware and associated power systems represents an essential economic and national priority.
